AT Day 146: Across the Mighty Kennebec River

ByPurple Haze Posted onJune 30, 2024September 24, 2025

Daily Miles: 4.0, Total Miles: 2,046.0

Not a great sleep but at least I was dry in a shelter and had no mice visit me. Headed out and arrived at the Pierce Pond Outlet, no bridge and clearly not able to cross without wading. Not wanting to get my feet wet early, I found a blue blaze that connected to a foot bridge downstream. I stopped at a smaller creek to fill up my water bottle and promptly slipped on wet rocks, falling into the creek getting both feet wet. Go figure.

Pierce Pond Stream

Followed the Pierce Pond Stream and several waterfalls all the way to the mighty Kennebec River. I found myself first in line on the south side to take the AT provided canoe ferry service across the river.

Kennebec River

I was soon joined by Stella and Greg, the canoe man, paddled us across to the Kennebec River north shore.

We got picked up by the son of the Sterling Inn owner, and he got us to the nearby inn. While waiting for my room to be ready, had a chat with Captain Jack, apparently with a big YouTube following.

Got cleaned up, washed my clothes and took a short nap. Joined Stella, Tadpole and Photos for a shuttle out to Northern Outdoors. Devoured a bid salad and meatloaf wrapped with bacon dinner and their own brewed IPA. Fun, filling and good conversation.

Zero day tomorrow with the main reason being I need my resupply box and the PO is only open between 2-4pm.
