AT Day 109: Dalton to Chesire & Beyond
Daily Miles: 21.5, Total Miles: 1,590.0
I got an early start and a nice downhill walk before being stopped by a long train at a RR crossing just before entering Dalton MA. Crossed the Housatonic River once again and strolled through the small town of Dalton on roads and sidewalks for a few miles. Tempted to stop for a snack but not much opportunity, may be better up the trail.

Just after leaving town, up and over North Mountain with good views down towards upcoming Chesire MA and valley. I walked right through the small, rural village of Chesire. But not before making a short detour to a gas station market with an adjoining Dunkin Donuts. I charged my phone while enjoying a cold drink and breakfast sandwich in the afternoon. Water bottle refills were not a problem there – nice people.
A rest and energy boost helped on the nearly 2k vertical feet, four-mile climb to the Mark Noepel Shelter. There were a few tent spots and I took one the furthest from the shelter. Two guys and a beagle I had passed going up the mountain arrived late and took the site next to mine. I love dogs but that poor beagle was very vocal. Shrill barking and whining about his distress with being outside, new surroundings, new noises and new people. May be a long night.
New birds today: Winter Wren and a Canada Warbler.
