AT Day 110: Mt Greylock down to Williamstown MA

ByPurple Haze Posted onMay 25, 2024September 24, 2025

Daily Miles: 9.6, Total Miles: 1,599.6

As I left the shelter this morning, I passed by the campsite with the distressed beagle. While barking, the beagle clawed holes through the mesh screen of the tent – the master was not happy.

A good uphill push got me to Mt Greylock, the highest point in Massachusetts at 3,491′, and the state’s first wilderness park.

Opening day for the lodge and thinking of maybe breakfast but they weren’t yet ready for business. I walked around the 1932 War Memorial Tower and enjoyed the great views on a beautiful morning.

Mostly downhill to Mt Prospect Ledge, a rocky outcrop with nice views of Williamstown MA below. I found the signage at the multiple trail junction confusing but took the trail most obvious. Over a mile down the mountain and cruising to an audio book, I noticed a blue slash on a tree, signifying a side trail to the main AT. A few choice words and disappointed in myself, I trudged back up the mountain and got on the real AT. Passed a few hikers I had met earlier in the day. They thought I was far ahead of them, so I had to confess my error.

Got down to MA Route 2 on the outskirts of Willliamstown MA. Only a short distance to a grocery store for an ice-cold beverage. While resting outside the store and googling what was around me, I saw there was the Williamstown Motel close by. Tired, dirty and hot, I decided to “retire” early. No regrets, a refreshing shower and a good pizza and salad dinner at nearby Olympia Restaurant.

New bird today: Dark-eyed Junco.
