AT Day 150: Independence Day in Monson ME

It didn’t seem very patriotic to be hiking out today. Besides, I thought an extra day’s rest would be helpful before the 100-Mile Wilderness. The big pancake breakfast at Shaw’s is so good and extra special. I think it’s because of the three eggs, bacon and potatoes before the pancakes even arrive! No need for lunch after that feast.

I bought a few goodies for the next leg. Also thought, what the heck, I will get a food drop in the middle of the 100-Mile Wilderness delivered by Shaw’s, to cut down on my pack weight. Never had that luxury on my other hikes. I had a double scoop of ice cream next door and wandered over to the AT office in town. Very informative and helpful on what to expect from here forward. Probably good reasons, but Baxter State Park has more rules, regulations and required passes than I have ever seen. Hope to get through the gauntlet.

Shaw’s Poet and Hippie Chick put on a nice 4th of July BBQ tonight with hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, watermelon and several desserts. Good mix and good times with NOBOs and SOBOs!
