AZT Day 47: Jacobs Lake & Kaibab Plateau North
Daily Miles: 23.8, Total Miles: 792.4
A turkey started gobbling about the time the moon set at 4:30am – seemed to be circling around me. Hard to believe this hike is coming to a close. My head says keep going but my legs say it’s time for a rest. I saw several more mulies heading down through the forest to Hwy 89A.
I decided that I must have a proper breakfast and get a water refill at the Jacob Lake Inn. Held up a sign that read “Only 2 Miles!” but no one would pick me up. Sparse traffic but must not be looking very good – what’s another 2 miles? Not only a big breakfast but two big cookies from their bakery to go. Got to chatting with a fellow diner, a turkey hunter, and he offered a ride to a spot ten miles away that had AT&T coverage where we could call our respective wives and then he would give me a lift back to the TH. Thanks Bill, maybe that was you I heard calling turkeys this morning.

Just the energy boost I needed to finish this passage through the sage flats, pine and juniper forests to Winter Road. While looking for a flat spot for my tent, I found a note from BDD (Derrick) that he passed through about three hours ago and was heading for the finish line. He will wait for me there to get a ride to Page tomorrow.
