CDT Day 127: Gibbons Pass, Hell Roaring Creek
Daily Miles: 26.9, Total Miles: 2,220.3
I stood right in front of the motel in Darby at 7:30am and had a ride to Lost Creek Pass within 10 minutes – I think the sign helped. Mike, who picked me up, is doing mortality studies on young elk in this area – interesting stuff.
I had to walk up one mile to rejoin the CDT at Chief Joseph Pass. This is the point where the trail finally leaves the border with Idaho and heads north through Montana. I enjoyed one of the lesser “elevation” days, cruising to Gibbons Pass and then on to Shultz Creek, a long 20-mile carry. Somewhere along the line, maybe at lunch, I lost a water bottle.

After a marathon day, I got to Hell Roaring Creek and set up camp. I just heard a bark/yelp – maybe a wolf? Really smoky today as I get closer to the Meyer Fire.

No hikers today but did meet some horse riders and mountain bikers on a weekend trip.
