CDT Day 60: Alpine Tunnel to Cottonwood Pass
Daily Miles: 21.5, Total Miles: 982.5
Last night was one of the better sleeps I’ve had on the trail. I still woke up early but deeper sleep and very restful.
Headed up the Alpine Tunnel trail, an old railroad grade used in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s to service gold mining communities. The grade made for good walking and beautiful views of the Chalk Creek Valley below.

After leaving the Alpine Tunnel, I hit a high point at 12,000 ft and then descended to Tincup Pass Road.

Went right back to above treeline at 12,800 ft, crossing several snow chutes and one large snowbank. Great views on top of Taylor Reservoir below.

I continued north along the Divide towards Cottonwood Pass. Today’s hike reminded me of the Sierras. Beautiful alpine scenery, high mountain peaks, and deep traverses to the valley below.
I somehow managed to miss the brunt of the thundershowers all around me. Set up camp in a patch of alpine tundra on the edge of the Divide. Alpine lakes on one side and clear view of Taylor Reservoir on the other.

I pitched the tent on really lumpy ground, and discovered later, over two large holes in the ground. No animals tried to crawl out – I was too tired to move anyway.
