CDT Day 90: Sweetwater River & South Pass City
Daily Miles: 21.7, Total Miles: 1,553.7
I generally like wide open spaces but was getting a bit anxious to finish the Basin. 30+ miles per day, long straight roads/trails, windy, getting warmer and some water sources now reduced to puddles. The good news is that I didn’t see a single tick.

Made good progress getting to Sweetwater River and heading out across the last desert expanse. Five miles out from South Pass City, I found the first shade tree in four days and stopped for lunch. A truck and trailer pulled off the dirt road next to the tree, and a guy jumps out, hands me a liter of water and tells me he hiked the CDT ten years ago. Cool!
South Pass City is an historic, restored mining community and I had some nice refreshments while talking to some of the volunteers and waiting for Mrs. Haze to pick me up.
We’re off to the Bitterroot River in Montana for a family reunion and some fishing. I’ll be back on the trail in about 10 days and then into the Wind River Range. Hopefully the fires have died down by then.
