CT: Reflections
We’re just back from visiting my son and family in Helena. Then on to Ketchum ID for a reunion with old friends. Driving through Stanley and along the Sawtooths got me thinking again about an Idaho hike!
So what were the best days on the CT?
- Stony Pass to Animas River – headlamp assisted early start and sunrise on the trail above treeline. High alpine country and lakes then down to drop dead gorgeous Elk Creek. All the way to the Animas River, capped off with short coal-fired narrow gauge train ride to Silverton.
- Little Molas Lake to Hermosa Creek – storm clearing and mist lifting from lakes and snow dusted peaks, crystal clear streams and waterfalls of Lime and Cascade Creeks
Best wildlife encounters: big bull moose in pond near Cottonwood Creek and another in the headwaters of Cochetopa Creek.
“Most” of any trail I have hiked: days rained or hailed on, mountain bikes, dirt bikes, hunters and mushrooms.
Best dog on the CT: Yaya’s young German Shepard, Star.
Best pizza: hands down Amicas Pizza in Salida.
Best bakery: the extensive, yummy selection at Lake City Bakery.
So what’s next? Not sure at this point. I really liked the good tread and scenery on the CT but do miss the remoteness and solitude of previous hikes. Stay tuned!
