DWTH Day 9: Strolling into Arizona City

ByPurple Haze Posted onApril 6, 2025December 4, 2025

Daily Miles: 5.5, Total Miles: 129.6

It started out as a quiet night until the wind kicked up and it was soon howling. I’m a side sleeper but my hip bones could not take the rock-hard ground so I lay flat on my back the whole night. Only getting short snippets of sleep, drifting in and out. I awoke to a layer of fine dust across the inside of my tent, gritty teeth and gummy eyes.

This was the last morning before a pickup in Arizona City at a prearranged time by Mrs. Haze. I would normally have a bit of a sleep in, leisurely morning and a stroll into town. Heating water for my second cup of coffee, my gas canister emptied and sputtered to a stop. Desperately wanting to get off the ground, I quickly packed up and left my sad little campsite.

The last stretch through state land before entering the small Arizona City community was a pretty stark, empty landscape.

Coming into Arizona City, this seemed a bit out of place!

Once on the paved road, I passed two Mexican restaurants, too early on a Sunday morning to take advantage. I also passed two Family Dollars before finally arriving at my Dollar General. Got a few snacks and a cold soda and plopped myself down outside against a wall and watched Arizona City wake up and go shopping. I was happy to see Mrs. Haze and Ellie arrive!

Due to warming weather, that’s probably as far as I will get until it cools off. After all, it is a Winter Thru-Hike!
