HDT Day 13: Out of Dark Creek Canyon to Hite
Daily Miles: 16.2, Total Miles: 169.7
My earliest start yet on the hike even after filtering some of the silty water from Dark Creek. On my last river crossing before joining the Sundance Trail out of the canyon, I stepped into a deep hole and let go of one of my hiking poles. Just as it was about out of reach floating downstream, I snagged it with my other hiking pole. Oh what a save, but I had to take an early swim. Nothing boring about the Hayduke!

I next faced a 1,200 ft vertical climb out of the canyon. Not really on a trail but a narrow zone of disturbance with multiple routes. I was soon joined on the climb by a young couple returning from a short backpacking trip. I gladly drafted them all the way to the top – much appreciated!

After a bit of cross-country, I took dirt roads almost all the way to Hite. This used to be quite the marina when Lake Powell was near full. Now they have a revitalized store and a rebuilt campground – I’m the only one staying here. The campground bathroom has a shower which I took advantage of. No towel, but I rotated the nozzle on the hand dryer to various body parts until only slightly moist.
I had left a resupply box here last month on my caching trip last month. The young couple running the concession are very hiker friendly and have started a hiker box. Free ice cream sandwich to Hayduke hikers!
