HDT Day 18: Over the Henry Mountains
Daily Miles: 20.9, Total Miles: 229.8
Chris from the nearby outfitters/ATV rentals dropped me off bright and early. He told me about the only free roaming buffalo herd (250-400) in North America that has been in the Henry Mountains for quite some time – I’ll keep a look out.
A pretty steady climb through the Henry foothills mostly on dirt roads. Excellent views of the north, middle, and south segments of the Henrys all snowcapped at the peaks. As I got higher, I noticed a few small gold mining ventures but didn’t see anyone working.
Got water and had lunch at snowmelt fed Cresent Creek, the starting point for my lower elevation crossing.

The dirt road contoured around the 8,500-9,000 ft elevation eventually getting me to Pennellen Pass.

Now I started to drop down with good views of upcoming Tarantula Mesa. I found a small flat spot that was suitable after clearing a few rocks.
Nice sunset!
