MRT Day 18: General Crook to Black Canyon Lake
Daily Miles: 27.4, Total Miles: 241.3
A brisk morning in the 30’s but it didn’t take long to shed the gloves and warm cap. I had to walk down Hwy 260 for a few miles then headed generally east all day long. A combination of dirt roads and the historic General Crook Trail, built in the 1870’s to help resupply military forts. Hiked in and out of scars from the huge 2002 Rodeo-Chediski fire which burned 732 square miles.
I passed by and around pretty Black Canyon Lake with a few shore fishermen well spread out. Then down the Black Canyon drainage for several miles.

Both fenced wildlife guzzler tanks I passed by today, including one I’m camped nearby, had plenty of water. Otherwise, pretty dry out here.

I saw a dozen elk today and 28 wild horses in a number of different groups. They are not as skittish as the Great Basin WY horses on the CDT but still very leery.

As I made dinner tonight, the coyotes were making themselves known with howl and yips from several family units/packs.
