MOGOLLON RIM TRAIL

MRT: Recap & “Best of Trail”

ByPurple Haze Posted onMay 28, 2021September 22, 2025

One week off the trail and suffering some from withdrawal. Should have kept going and done the second half of the GET over again!

T-shirt from Mrs. Haze!

I tipped the scales 17 pounds lighter on this one. I always say I’ll work hard to keep it off but not making any promises this time.

So time for the “best of trail”.

Best four days on the trail: It would have to be the Highline Trail from Pine to the top of the Rim and Forest Lakes. Hiking with my son, trail name of Mini-Me, was a real treat and he bagged his first thru-hike, the 55-mile Highline Trail. A really good stretch on the Rim with good views – just enjoy the creeks while you still can!

Best day that left me wanting more: I’d have to say West Clear Creek Canyon. It was downright beautiful but way too quick. I could say the same for Wet Beaver Creek. More exploration will be required!

Best feed: A tie between the prime rib special at Molly Butler Lodge in Greer and the NY strip carne asada at Licano’s Mexican Food and Steakhouse in Show Low.

Best milkshake: Hands down the caramel milkshake at the Alpine General Store. Enjoy while washing your clothes next door.

Best wildlife encounter: The elk herds in the big meadows of the White Mountains, the wild horses of the Rim Country and a special mention of the turkey decoys that fooled me in the Baldy Wilderness.

Mrs. Haze and I will be spending a large part of the summer near Steamboat Springs and re-visiting some Zirkel Wilderness hikes. Also got a few weeks planned in Idaho waters near Sandpoint and Priest Lake, which may be a stop on a future thru-hike.

Thanks for folllowing along!
