PCT Day 84: Burney Falls and Beyond

ByPurple Haze Posted onJuly 18, 2013September 21, 2025

Daily Miles: 25.5, Total Miles: 1437.3

I passed the fish hatchery walking along Baum Lake and saw several pelicans and herons fishing for their breakfast.

Shortly after crossing Highway 89 was the Wild Bird cache provided by Randy and Kathy. What a fun setup with camp chairs, well-stocked coolers and a radio. All PCT hikers were encouraged to write their trail names on a picnic table. I had a grape soda, small candy bars, and ensured Purple Haze was well represented at the table. Thanks guys!

Next stop was Burney Falls State Park for my re-supply box at the general store. Mingled with the tourists although I think some thought I was a hobo. I usually shy away from rotisserie hot dogs because most look like they have been going around and around for months. But today is not a normal day and they looked somewhat fresh. I just couldn’t decide whether I wanted a hot dog or a polish dog so bought one of each and enjoyed them at an outside picnic table.

On the way back to the PCT, I got a nice view of the impressive Burney Creek Falls.

Crossed the east end of Lake Britton’s dam and started a 1,500 ft climb. On the way, crossed a bridge over Rock Creek. Since this was the warmest hiking day thus far, I took a refreshing dip in a nice pool under the bridge and just upstream from a waterfall.

I then continued the climb to Peavine Creek and set up camp.
