PCT: Gone Fishing

ByPurple Haze Posted onJanuary 26, 2013September 28, 2025

The opportunity to fly fish remote streams and alpine lakes used to be the primary reason for my hiking. I used to pick out lakes on Colorado, Idaho, and Montana topo maps and find a way to get there. But now I am not really disappointed if the lake is barren or just can’t catch anything – it’s much more about the journey.

Catch & Release Brown

My boys think I’m crazy to not carry a flyrod through the Sierras again. I did when on the John Muir Trail years ago. But it’s either fishing gear or more days of food for the long haul from Kennedy Meadows to VVR. Besides, this is a hiking trip!

My base weight will be 1.5 lbs lighter than last year until I add an ice axe and bear canister.
