SKIT Day 32: Dos Cabezas Mountains
Daily Miles: 15.7, Total Miles: 426.7
Easter morning is probably not the best time to hitch back to the trail. That’s just the way it worked out. After an hour wait on the on-ramp with very sparse traffic, a gentleman picked me up and took me 15 miles to the I-10 Bowie/Luzena Interchange.
I headed down the freeway frontage road that eventually turned into Page Ranch Road. After several miles, I turned south straight into the Dos Cabezas Mountains. I altered the route slightly to enter the range directly up Buckeye Canyon. Definitely cattle country but also evidence of a mining history – gold, silver and lead.
I unfortunately had to quickly pass through some private property up against the mountains but had no problems. Started gaining elevation on a hot afternoon, joining Cement Canyon, and the primitive road turned into a cow trail. I made it to my destination, Cement Springs, which had a concrete-walled trough full of water, my prayers being answered. Obviously for cattle but not too fouled except for cow slobber.

Some time left in the day but I am facing a steep, waterless scramble the rest of the way up this canyon. Best tackled in the morning.
Lots of rabbits, cows and one non-venomous snake today.
