SKIT Day 33: Dos Cabezas Mtns to Ft Bowie
Daily Miles: 14.7, Total Miles: 441.4
Got an early start knowing it was going to be a cross-country scramble. Up and out of several washes on the hottest hiking day so far, probably close to 90 degrees.
I reached the Dos Cabezas Wilderness boundary and continued a steep climb up Cement Canyon to Happy Canyon to Tar Box Canyon.

Rough, rough country, no trail, and slow, slow progress. I wanted to get water at Bob Lee Spring but it was a muddy mess and fouled by cattle. I then overshot what was supposed to be the high point. I had to carefully pick my way down to the primitive road that would take me down Wood Canyon.

I dropped down to a windmill and trough, got water, and made it to Apache Pass. I’m feeling baked by the sun.

No problems finding my food and water cache off of Apache Pass Road. I continued down the Fort Bowie loop trail, worth a side trip if you have never been there. I made camp in a wash near a gas pipeline. relieved to be completely in the shade and the sun close to setting.
